SmartEye v1.2.0 – What’s New
- Focus Assist – Located under Settings > Display. Shows the average star size in Live View to help achieve precise focus. Smaller values indicate better focus.
- Crosshair Overlay – New on-screen crosshair to help center objects (Settings > Display).
- Night Vision Mode – Green night-vision style display to preserve dark adaptation (Settings > Display > Modes).
- Manual Motor Focus Support (Web Dashboard) – Control supported motor focusers from the Web Dashboard. Currently compatible with Pegasus focusers (e.g., FocusCube v3).
- Improved Live View Exposure Control – Use the Astro Crown in Live View to adjust exposure time from 0.1 to 0.5 seconds. Auto Exposure has been removed for Live View.
- SD Card Organization by Session – Images are now grouped into folders by session date for easier file management.
- Less Intrusive Live Stacking Warnings – The alignment failure message can now be disabled (Settings > Display > Alignment Error Msg). When alignment fails, a faint red circle appears around the edge of the view instead.
- New Missing Dark Frame Warning – SmartEye now alerts you if dark frames are unavailable when required .

SmartEye v1.1.0 – What’s New
- Improved Wi-Fi networking and mount connectivity (especially ZWO AM5/3 & Sky-Watcher).
- Wi-Fi band (2.4/5Ghz) now displayed in Settings > General > SmartEye Wi-Fi.
- Added Wi-Fi Reset to Direct Mode in Settings > General > Reset to AP Mode.

SmartEye v1.0.2 – What’s New
- Wi-Fi Connections – Improved Wi-Fi stability, speed, and error handling.
- New Menu Option to Clear Dark Library – Quickly remove all stored dark frames from your device.
- Screen Saver Timing Adjusted – Instead of turning the screen completely off, the screen saver will now activate after 20 minutes of inactivity.
- Improved Stability for Stacking – Stacking will now wait to begin until the eyepiece is stable, preventing blurred results from accidental movement.
- Resume Previous View – When you resume from standby, SmartEye will now display the last stacked image you were working on.
- Lowest Cooling Temperature Now 0 °C – You can now set the cooling module down to 0 °C. Remember, maintaining a consistent temperature is more important than reaching the lowest possible value. In ALPACA Camera mode, lower temperatures can still be set.
- On-Screen Gamma Feedback – Gamma adjustment now appears on-screen when turning the crown during Live View or stacking.
- SD Card Formatting Fix – Resolved an issue that prevented formatting a fresh or previously unmounted SD card directly from SmartEye.
Update Methods
Update via Wi-Fi
(Note: Version 1.1.0 or later is required for Wi-Fi updates to work)
- Connect to the SmartEye Wi-Fi network (SmartEye-xxxxxx) and open the Web Dashboard at http://smarteye.local
- Log in to the admin area (default password: smart).
- Tap Settings (top right), expand the Wi-Fi section, go to the Client tab, and select Scan Networks to connect to your home network. Internet access is required.
- Once reconnected, refresh your browser (hard refresh recommended). If a new version is available, a notification will appear in Settings. Click the link and follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest firmware directly through the Web Dashboard.
⚠️Important: Do not power off or disconnect the device from the internet during the update.
Update Notifications When Using SkySafari
When you connect to your SmartEye device through the SkySafari app, you'll now be notified if a firmware or software update is available. This ensures you always know when it's time to update your SmartEye, so you can take advantage of the latest features and improvements.
Update via USB-C
Software Updater
Get the new updater for v1.1.0 below - do not use any previous installers.
Ensure your computer’s USB-C port supports Power Delivery (PD) output of at least 30W. Many modern computers and laptops do. If SmartEye is not detected when connected, try using a powered USB-C hub with PD pass-through (30W or higher), or refer to the Updating via SD Card section below.
On some SmartEye units,USB-C firmware updating is disabled by default depending on the firmware version currently installed.If your computer is not detecting SmartEye for a USB update, follow these steps:
Step 1 — Connect to SmartEyeJoin theSmartEye Wi-Fi network using the Wi-Fi details provided with your device.
Step 2 — Open the SmartEye InterfaceOnce connected, open a web browser and go to: smarteye.local
Step 3 — Log Into Settings
1. Tap the Settings (gear icon)
2. When prompted, enter the password:smart
Step 4 — Enable USB Disk Mode:
- Open the System section
- Find USB Disk
- Switch the setting to Enable
This allows SmartEye to be recognized over USB-C for firmware updates.
- Connect SmartEye to your computer using the included USB-C cable.
- Launch the SmartEye Updater (ensure you’re connected to the internet).
- If an update is available, select Perform Update.
- Once complete, safely eject SmartEye - the update will install on the next boot after unplugging and replugging the USB-C power cable.
- Please wait until you see the diopter adjustment screen. The update process may take up to 5 minutes, and the device may reboot one or more times during the update. This is normal behavior—please do not interrupt the process.
Update via SD Card
- Insert your microSD card into SmartEye.
- Format it via the SmartEye interface: Menu → Settings → Storage → Format SD Card.
- Remove the microSD card and insert it into your computer SD Card slot or SD Card Reader.
- Launch the SmartEye Updater and select Perform Update when prompted.
- Once the update is complete, safely eject the microSD card, reinsert it into the SmartEye, and then power the device using the included 12v power adapter or a compatible power bank (30W+ model with Power Delivery (PD) feature) using the included USB-C cable to complete the process. Do not plug SmartEye into the PC
- Please wait until you see the diopter adjustment screen. The update process may take up to 5 minutes, and the device may reboot one or more times during the update. This is normal behavior—please do not interrupt the process.
